Description: »In “Documentary Chaucer: Cecily Chaumpaigne, the Archive, and the Future of Chaucer Studies,” guest editors Sarah Baechle, Carissa M. Harris, and Samantha Katz Seal position Cecily Chaumpaigne at center-stage. Eight new essays explore what the documentary evidence does and does not say about the relationship between Chaumpaigne and Chaucer, who Chaumpaigne was in her own right, why the legal case remains important to understanding the sociocultural environment in which Chaumpaigne and Chaucer lived, what the case suggests about Chaucer’s treatment of women, how constraints upon women in Chaucer’s works may be explored vis-à-vis the historical Chaumpaigne, and how one might approach each of these subjects in teaching Chaucer’s poetry.
